Fly to Florida and then Drive up the East Coast February 2009 (Pictures Below)

So I might have to rethink this living in Botswana. It seemed like a great (cheap) place to live and a central location to travel the world but these flights back to the United States are killing me.

Here is my route, Botswana to Cape Town, South Africa then an overnight flight from South Africa to Atlanta Georgia, finally a short hop to Philly, with connections about 24 hours of travel time. One cool thing was live Internet on the flight from South Africa to Georgia the best part it was free as long as you did a survey at the end of the flight.

I played about 3 hour of poker on the flight, had a big loss early on when I had KK vs. AA, lost about 170. I slowly built my stack back up. And then stacked a guy that fell in love with his JJ I had 79 suited. This hand is a classic hand of not falling in love with a pair of jacks, and the value of implied odds. This guy should have read my poker strategy of playing pocket pairs. Especially the section on pocket jacks. (See both hands below)

I got into Philly on Saturday hung out with some old friends and then meet up with Gary. The flight to Florida is Sunday morning.

I was beat from the flights I must be getting old. So I went to sleep 8:00 pm Saturday.

Sunday got up and Gary and I headed back to the airport I must be just plain stupid or just want extra frequent flyer miles, what the hell was I thinking fly from Atlanta to Philly to go back to West Palm Beach, Florida. Maybe it was because it saved me 10 bucks booking the flight this way.

The flight to West Palm was 3 hours, just a short hop compared to the flights from the day before. We are staying with Gary's parents in Florida. The reason for this trip is they have and extra car and Gary is going to take it off their hands.

The have a very nice house in a small golf community. I went for a run it was nice to stretch my legs after 2 days of flying. After the run Gary and I went to Delray Beach to get some dinner. The main drag in Delray is lined with all types of restaurants. We had a nice Italian meal.

The academy awards were on so we headed back to watch them. Before the awards we caught some of the evening news. Currently life in America is a far cry from life in Botswana. It has been just a little over a month since my last visit from what I can tell with the direction and velocity the United States economy is going south I think life in Botswana may soon be better from an economic stand point then life in America. Slum dog millionaire won big, no big surprise there.

Got up early Monday the community Gary’s parents (Jack and Barbara) live in has a nice club house with a pool and weight room so I did a light work out and swam. Gary and I headed out to give the new car a shake down cruise before our 1,200 mile drive to New Jersey.

We wanted to go do some exploring of the Everglades. We are north of Everglades National Park which I had visited during my thanksgiving trip.  There are some wild life preserves in this area that we set out to find.

We headed to Loxahatchee to visit Loxahatchee Natural Wild Life Preserve. Only to find out the north entrance is now closed to the public. The south entrance was about 40 miles away so we headed to Lake Okeechobee about 20 miles North West of where we were at. On the way we saw the wackiest thing a helicopter was caught in some high tension wires and the co-pilot was outside the copter try to get it free from the wires. (See picture)

After watching for a few minutes we called 911 the operator told us it was a crime to call in fake reports and hung up the phone, I guess she did not believe us, so we just went on our way.

Lake Okeechobee is huge it was like an ocean without waves. Most of the area from the wilderness preserve to the lake was agriculture a lot of sod farms.

From the lake we headed north to Indian Town and then we headed southeast. We stopped at the John G. and Susan H. Dupuis Jr. Wildlife and Environmental Area where they were having a controlled forest fire it was “WILD”. Get it “wild” fire. They also had a driving nature trail this was a 7 mile trail through the park it was a dirt road with many ruts, perfect tour for our shake down cruise. The Lexis came out with flying colors. From there we headed home where Gary's Mom made a great seafood pasta dish. Very delicious, I just hope I do not get a gout attack.

Played a little poker had a nice little win and headed to bed.

Went for a run in the morning, I need to step up the training if I plan to be competitive in the Philadelphia Broad Street Run. I did 3 miles at an 8 minute mile pace and was wiped out. For Broad Street I need to do 10 miles at a 7.5 minute pace.

Spent most of the day reading at the pool, had a nice dinner and then watched the president’s speech. I am reading The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life it is a great read with everything that is going on in this world, especially the United States

What a great speech, just think parents taking responsibilities for their own kids. What a novel idea. This president is full of good ideas, but I have the solution to the health care issue, it is called putting fat people on a DIET.

Wednesday we headed to Boca Raton to meet some friends I use to work with, Limo Lady and Hemingway. We meet them at their condo on the beach what a beautiful place with beautiful views. We then had lunch at Mizner Park.  This is a main street type area that has shops, restaurants, apartments and a park area that offers free concerts. It was great to see Tina and Bif and catch up on things. After lunch Gary and I headed to South Beach. We spent a few hours walking around and doing a bit of people watching.

Back to Boynton Beach (the town Gary’s Parents live in) for a good nights sleep. Thursday starts our drive home. I got a last few rays of sunshine by the pool before we headed north. Our first stop was Daytona Beach. It was the beginning of Bike Week. This is when thousands of motorcyclists come from all over the world to show off their bikes, drink beer and have a great time. Some of these motorcycles are works of art and worth tens of thousands of dollars. After a few hours of people watching and admiring the motorcycles we headed to Savannah Georgia. We arrived at 10:15 pm. I was beat but Gary has a new girl friend, Sally (see picture), so he was up until 2:00 am talking to her. This made it hard to sleep.

We got up Friday walked around Savannah and then headed to stop number two, Richmond, Virginia. The plan was to have dinner with my friend John, but he had a bad headache, so Gary and I were on our own we ate at Joe’s Inn. I think they have the best baked spaghetti in the world.

Saturday morning we were meeting Kevin at 7:00 am so I put Gary and Sally on a curfew and explained no love talk after 10:00 pm as I needed my sleep. Kevin is a real-estate investor in Richmond and I was meeting him as I am thinking of investing in real-estate in the United States, I think over time this may be a good investment with the way values have gone down over the last few years. We headed north about 2:00 PM I had a flight out of JFK in New York Sunday morning and Gary was dropping me off at the train station in Philly and he was heading home. Train, planes, and automobiles I arrived in Botswana about 36 hours later.

Usually I do not play poker while I am on a trip but this week was an exception I was having a good February and I wanted to finish up strong. I ended up winning $405.90 this week, playing a total of 7.68 hours so my hourly rate was $52.83 an hour. For the month I won 1,306.35 playing 41.95 hours or an hourly rate of $31.14 an hour. I think this may have been one of my best months.

See some interesting hand below.

DaMinkie joins the table at seat #1
JC-TheGuide: bets $22
DUG: raises $30 to $52 I am playing like I hit a set except my preflop  raise does not match, unless I raised with pocket 8's. This is what I would call a semi-buff I have 8 outs, if he has a hand.
JC-TheGuide: raises $153.80 to $205.80 and is all-in Oh. NO! he has a hand, AA or KK
DUG: calls $125.80 and is all-in $125 to win a little less the $300.00 almost 3 to 1. I have 8 outs, 8 x 4 is 32 so I have a 32% chance to win. This is border line, if I factor in he might have AK, then I have 6 more outs any 7 and any 5. Which make it 14 x 4 or 56% to win so I have to call.
Uncalled bet ($28) returned to JC-TheGuide
