November 22nd, 2008 for some unknown reason I am going to attempt to run 26.2 miles, the Philadelphia Marathon. I plan to document the run with words and pictures. So why am I doing this run? When I arrived in Botswana I made the decision I was going to immerse myself in African and Botswana culture. Sports are big in Botswana, with football (soccer) being a huge national sport, unfortunately for me I have NO hand eye coordination in this case foot eye coordination. So football was out for me. Then it hit me, marathon running, almost always Kenyans win all the big marathons, though I am not living in Kenya, Kenya is in Africa. (Story continued below pictures, map of marathon course at bottom of post)
I had been training all summer for this race, and then the race sold out so I was going to pass on running, Margarite had signed up for the marathon and then got a stress facture so I am in, running with her number.
A few weeks before the race I got contacted by this guy named Shrek, he had been reading LifeOfDUG and saw I was planning on running the Philadelphia Marathon. Shrek has a running club and most of the members were going to be running the Philadelphia Marathon, the name of his running club is Full Moon Running Club (FMRC). The name for the club was developed because this group of runners runs at 5:00 am the only time they can see where they are running is when there is a full moon. Shrek contacted me to see if I wanted to run with his members. Anybody that knows anything about running a marathon knows it is always more fun to run as a group then alone. So of course I said yes. I also offered to host a pre-race pasta dinner for carbohydrate loading. Fortunately I still have some friends in the U.S. and was able to borrow a house to host the party, which was a great success.
Race day, the plan was to meet at 5:30 am, the list of runners was, Shrek, Mike, Naomi, David, Heather, Michael, Lou, Ted, and James. Lou, Ted, and James were not part of the FMRC, just folks that somehow tagged along. The temputure when we awoke was 24 degrees. Perfect running weather, especially if you are from Botswana which has an average year round temputure of about 70 degrees. Once down in Philadelphia we all grouped up at the Sheraton Hotel, for a couple of reasons. It was warm and it was close to the start. Thanks to Mike, great idea. We had several spectators with us, Kelli, Mike’s wife, Margarite, Gary a childhood friend of mine, Bill and Liz, James’s parents, Dan, Naomi’s husband. The spectators were going to be placed strategically around the course so that they could hand us water and fuel if we needed it, and could take any extra clothes we had if it got warm, or we got warm from running. We had Greg showing up a little later with Nathan, Greg is Heather’s husband and Nathan is their son. The race started at 7:00 am, at 6:45 we headed to the start it was now warming up and around 28 degrees. Once at the start the temputure was fine, 18,000 people all squeezed together generates a lot of heat. We lined up with the 3 hour and 50 minute folks. Naomi was the only runner in our group with a real goal and that was to break 3 hours and 50 minutes. For both Ted and Michael it was their first Marathon and they just wanted to finish. Mike had been sick for about 6 weeks prior to the race, so I was worried about him finishing, Shrek had developed a bone spur of some sort on his foot 3 weeks before the race so he would be running with a good deal or pain. I had never done a marathon before without walking part of it, so my goal was to run all 26.2 miles, no stopping and no walking.
I had borrowed a small camera from Mobe as mine is a little big to run with. I really wanted to document the race for folks that do not do marathons so they can see the excitement and thrill of running 26.2 miles, as well as the type of people that run, all types.
The start was very interesting, I had never seen a start like this, first the wheelchair racers went off, this is normal, as the wheelchairs are much faster then the runners, yes people push a wheel chair 26.2 miles, and do it faster then the fastest runner can. Next the elite runners went, these are the runners that are ranked, this is also normal, and allows for them not to get hurt by the crowds that will follow. After the elites it is normal to then let the rest of the runners go. At some marathons they have multiple starts, for example in the New York Marathon they have 3 separate courses for the start, and then at mile 8 all three courses merge together, this allows the runners to spread out. Some marathons have a wave start, for example the Marine Corp Marathon has 2 starts, 15 minutes apart. They both follow the same course they try to put the slower runners in the second start. Both the New York Marathon and the Marine Corp Marathon have over 40,000 people running. What happened this year at the Philadelphia Marathon was they did a wave start but on the fly. They would let a few thousand people go and then hold everybody up and then let more people go, and then stop again, until all 18,000 people were out on the course. This seemed to work very well as the race starts on the Ben Franklin Parkway but quickly hits the narrow streets of center city and old town, by slowly letting people start the race the city streets do not become a dangerous bottle neck for the runners.
At about 7:15 am we crossed the start line, the Full Moon Running Club was off. We stuck together for the first mile and had a split of 8:48 which was right on pace for a 3 hour 50 minute marathon. There was just one issue, I carry a GPS watch and it showed we hit one mile about a quarter of a mile short of the posted one mile marker. If my watch was correct we were ahead of pace. At that point Michael fell back a little which was the right thing to do, this was his first marathon and he needed to treat it as such and not burn out. Shortly after he dropped back so did Ted. At mile 2 we had our first pit stop Margarite, Gary, Bill and Liz had water for us and was ready to take any extra clothes we had. It had almost warmed up to 30 degrees but we all opted to keep all our clothes on. Our split for mile 2 was 8:23, for this mile my watch hit right on at 1 mile, I am sure that first mile was long. At mile 3 Shrek, Lou and Mike stopped to pee. This always cracks me up in marathons many people will have to use the bathroom, most women get mad at the men, as the men will find any tree, wall or even open space whip out there manly-hood and pee. Any women around will simple say, “That is so unfair”.
We had not seen James since the start and assumed he was ahead of us. David was doing the Philadelphia Half Marathon and we were sure he was far ahead of us. The race mentally seemed to be going fast, about mile 4 we were all warming up, we had lost Mike and Shrek, so it was Lou, Naomi, Heather and I. Heather had a throw away sweatshirt on and got rid of that, unfortunately as she threw it another runner was passing and thought the shirt fell out of the sky as she caught it in her arms. A quick explanation and all was good. Mile 3 and 4 had splits of 8:17 and 8:24 receptively my heart rate was about 160 beats per minute, very comfortable. Each mile we were building a lead over our 3 hour and 50 minute goal. We lost Lou at mile 5 we thought he fell behind but he actually got a head of us. At 5.5 miles we found Margarite, Gary, Liz and Bill, picked up some water and I got rid of a shirt, still had 2 shirts on. At mile 6 we saw Dan, Naomi picked up more water and got rid of her gloves. This was a calculated risk, though at this point it was almost warm 32 degrees, the buildings of the city were blocking any wind, who knew how cold our hands might get if the wind starts blowing. As we headed west out of center city towards west Philadelphia and the zoo, we held our pace and the race seem to be somewhat easy for all of us. It was now just Heather, Naomi and I. There was no mile marker for mile 7 so psychologically that messed with a lot of runner’s heads. Having my watch I knew we had passed 7 miles. At mile 10 we hit our first hill and had to slow a little. Mile 5 though 10 had splits of 8:48 8:29 8:16 8:37 8:23 8:44 we did slow a little at mile 5 to pick up some water. After the hill at mile 10 we called Dan so he would be ready to re-supply us, he would be waiting at mile 12.
The Marathon nightmare hit me at mile 10, I had to pooh in the worst possible way. Why is this a nightmare? Normally when you get this type of attack there is not a porta-john in site, also every time my foot hit the ground my sphincter muscle had to work harder then it ever had before. I thought about my hiking trip in the Grand Teton Mountains where I went 3 days without poohing and I was able to get the urge to pass.
At mile 11 we started strategizing on when to start our kick, now you might think this strange, almost half way through the race and we are feeling great. One issue with a marathon is you want to make sure you do not run out of gas, but at the same time you want nothing left in your tank when you cross the finish line. To accomplish this you need to accurately decided on when to pick the pace up, and how much to pick it up by. We decided we would see how we felt at 15 miles and then decide. We had one more hill, Lemon Hill and that was at about 15 miles. I had been taking picture all along the route and trying to get all the mile markers at mile 14 the batteries went dead. Mobe had given me two batteries, but I had no idea I would need them both, so no more pictures after 14 miles.
At mile 13 the course split the half marathon folks split off and finished, and the marathon folks headed west toward Manayunk. At mile 15 we picked up Jen another member of the FMRC she was not running the Marathon and she had done the Marine Corp Marathon a few weeks before she was just hanging with us to keep us company. We hit Manyunk at mile 19. We had slowed a little with mile 11 though 19 having splits of 8:20 8:26 8:51 8:28 8:55 8:44 8:51 8:37 8:45 my heart rate was still staying around 160 beats per minute which I was very happy with. The 3:50 pace group started gaining on us around mile 18, they had about a 2 minute lead on us, from the wave start, so I knew we were still ahead of pace, but it was getting to close for comfort. We picked up drinks from Dan and Greg at mile 18 and we also picked up the pace. I was feeling the miles at this point and had a little concern if I would make my goal of not walking. I starting to think back to my trip in France and my bike ride up Mont Ventoux I knew if was able to make that ride I could easily finish this run.
At mile 20 Naomi took off not sure what got into her, but the extra speed was just what I needed, stretching out my legs made me feel so much better, at mile 21 I knew I would finish without walking, now I had to make sure we all finished strong. Jen would get water from Margarite and Dan and bring it to us. This was a huge help and allowed us to skip all the water stops. At below 32 degrees waters stops are more like ice skating rinks as most of the water ends up on the ground and freezes we saw several people go down and go down hard. Mile 20 through 24 had splits of 8:36 8:20 8:33 8:24 8:35. At this point people were dropping, with the cold temperatures many that did not dress correctly were getting hyperthermia and other were not hydrating enough and were getting dehydrated. At mile 24 I realized Heather could qualify for The Boston Marathon, by running a 3 hour 45 minute Philadelphia Marathon. The only problem, we would have to run the last 2.2 miles at a pace faster then we had run any of our other miles, but not a pace faster then Heather could run. I started yelling at Naomi and Heather to pick it up. Not sure if it would make them go faster or just want to kill me, but I figure if it made them want to kill me they would have to catch me which would get them to run faster. We ran our last two miles at a pace of 8:42 and 8:20 our last mile was tied for our second fastest mile. At the end of the race we finished with a time of 3 hours 47 minutes, we beat Heather and Naomi’s goal of 3 hours and 50 minutes and we beat my goal of not walking. My watch said 26.55 miles rather then 26.2 miles, I trust my watch and feel we ran an extra .35 miles which is about 2.5 minutes at the pace we were running. We were all very happy with our times.
The plan was to meet at the family meeting place under the letter F for Full Moon Running Club. Lou had finished ahead of us with a time of 3 hours and 42 minutes. James had not felt good and bailed at the half marathon finish. David entered the half marathon and finished with a great time of 1 hour and 38 minutes.
Official Results Full Moon Running Club
Naomi 3:47:24
Heather 3:47:30
Shrek 4:25:27
Mike 4:35:07
Michael 4:35:52
Half Marathon
David 1:38:35
Lastly we had one big hiccup after the race we all meet at the “F” family meeting area, Gary was no where to be found, we kept calling his cell phone with no luck. Finally we got a call from the Philadelphia police Gary had tried to get to the finish line to congratulate us, as he passed through a section only allowed for the press, Gary got nasty with the police and they arrested him. They asked if we wanted to bail him out and we politely refused.
We all agreed this was one of the best marathons we had run, mostly because of the company.
Off to South Beach, Miami, Florida, for some sun and fun and then back to Botswana.
Cheers,

I have now been back visiting the United States for three weeks and I can not wait to head back to Botswana. I have never seen a bigger bunch of babies. In the past, years and years ago my understanding was the U.S. was a super power and looked up to by almost all other countries. Today as I travel the world, other countries tolerate the U.S. and its policies because of the U.S. has money or should I say has borrowed money. I am not talking about individual people. In that regard I have never been to a country that did not treat Americans with respect and dignity, I am talking policies and attitudes.
So what do I mean they are babies?
In the three weeks I have been in the U.S. the financial markets have tumbled about 15%, which is in addition to another 35% before I arrived. I did a little research to understand why. Here is what I found, for the last 10 years or maybe even longer the entire U.S. economy was running a Ponzi Scheme.
A Ponzi Scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that involves promising or paying abnormally high returns ("profits") to investors out of the money paid in by subsequent investors, rather than from net revenues generated by any real business. It is named after Charles Ponzi. A Ponzi scheme has similarities with a pyramid scheme though the two types of fraud are different. Please watch the following video to help understand and then read on.
Some basics you need to understand the U.S. economy today is driven by consumers. The money they spend drives America’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The U.S. is no longer a manufacturing country (They do not make the Goods that the world uses like they use to) and they are starting to lose their ability to be a service country as other countries citizens become better educated and have a stronger work ethic. (See picture of U.S. College Students verses China College Students above)
As I mentioned a Ponzi Scheme is when abnormally high profits are paid to investors out of money paid by subsequent investors. This scheme works well until you run out of new investors.
The problem with the U.S. Economy is that the housing market was built on a Ponzi Scheme. It was so obvious and yet no one wanted to stop it, because everybody was making money, or they thought they were.
The Federal Reserve lent money very cheaply to the banks. This put a lot of money into the market. Since the banks were getting this money so cheap they would lend it out very cheaply, this increased consumer demand. In a capitalistic society when demand goes up faster then supply, prices go up. Let us look at housing; the banks were lending money so cheaply almost anybody could afford a house, so demand for houses went up and the price of houses climbed rapidly. As prices went up more people wanted a house since they saw it was a great investment, and demand kept growing. In reality the increase in the home value was not real, sure one house in a neighborhood might sell for $300,000.00 but that does not mean if everyone wanted to sell there house at the same time they would all get $300,000.00.
Now the problem gets worse, both consumers and banks got even greedier, banks saw the value of house going up and wanted to participate in some of those gains. So they designed mortgages that made consumers payments very low to start, but very high after a few years. Then the banks sold these mortgages with the promise of higher payments in the future. This way banks or mortgage issuer made more money upfront and got rid of the risk. The consumers got greedy and bought houses that they could not afford, but since the mortgages were cheap on the front end and they knew the price of the house would go up they felt it was a safe bet. In a Ponzi Scheme, the trouble comes when there are no new investors. As time went on some home owners were forced to sell their homes because they could not afford the higher mortgage payments. This caused an increase in the supply of homes at the same time as people saw more homes for sales prices started to decline and this caused less demand, Supply out striped Demand. Each month more people had their monthly payments increase and could not afford their homes which put more houses on the market which increase supply even more and reduces demand even more, which droves the prices even lower. This was the start of the crash.
Many Americans that did not buy new homes as prices were going up got home equity loans they borrowed money to buy things. They used the inflated equity in their house as collateral. So instead of waiting until they could afford an item they borrowed money to buy the item. This drove a lot of the consumer purchasing for the last 10 years.
As the prices of their homes drop they could no longer borrow and thus had to spend less.
All of the above has caused the U.S. economy to fall off a cliff. Today this is affecting the whole world as most of the items the U.S. consumer buys come from over seas. In reality what you are seeing is the largest transfer of wealth in world history. In the past 10 years the people of the United States have transferred a significant amount of it’s wealth to other countries.
Why do I say they are babies? From CEOs to politicians to consumers, they all want to blame each other and none of them want to deal with the pain. Everybody wants handouts. Instead of fixing the problem and becoming a leader in the world, the U.S. is borrowing more money from other countries and throwing band-aids on the problem. The U.S. today owes other countries or its citizens over ten trillion dollars. Let me show you what ten trillion looks like. $10,000,000,000,000.00, there are three hundred million people in the U.S. that is $33,333.00 each would have to pay to get the U.S. out of debt. The interest alone on ten trillion is three hundred billion a year. That means every year each American pays the government $1,000.00 just to cover interest in the debt.
So what is going to happen, one of two things?
One the U.S. people learn that they created this problem and fixing it will be painful, they need to stop living on credit, start saving, and most important created new technologies and products that other countries will want, this will be painful and take several years, pay down the debt give up luxury items and things will be great again.
Two they just keep borrowing to support an unrealistic way of life, at some point other countries will get concerned that the U.S, will not be able to repay its debt and the countries with money will want higher interest rates to lend to the U.S. which at some point will bankrupt the U.S. much like what happened in Russia and the U.S. will no longer be a supper power.
Living in Botswana I see people that are happy when they get the right amount of rain so the crops will grow so they can eat, in the U.S. I see people that are stressed because they can only buy their kids a WII this year instead of a WII and an X-box. What a bunch of babies.
I hope the citizens of the U.S. decided to take the pain, get their house in order and become the leaders they should be. Maybe their new leader President Elect Obama will help.
One other example of no one willing to take the pain or think long term, during the three weeks I have been in the U.S. I have seen gas drop about one dollar a gallon, all the sudden everybody is driving again and not conserving. If they put a $2.00 a gallon tax in place, no one would notice since the price has dropped about $2.00 from the high, and people would keep conserving on fuel.
Now for Poker statistics.
I had a good week of Poker played almost 8 hours and won $307.45 which is an hourly rate of $38.51 an hour, below shows my worst hand and best hand of the week.
This hand I was just plain brain dead.

*** FLOP *** [Qh Jd 8h] Great flop, now I need to hope someone has JQ or AQ, maybe even AJ would stay in.
Lawyerbyday: checks
DUG: bets $9 Need to build the pot, plus there is a flush draw possibility. 3/4 of the pot bet kills the odds for a flush draw, but if the flush hits I can act like I was on the draw.
AR_GTAm: raises $21 to $30 He has JQ, if he had QQ or JJ he would have reraised preflop.
Lawyerbyday: folds
DUG: calls $21 I only call because I want him to keep betting.
*** TURN *** [Qh Jd 8h] [3h] I am not worried about him having a flush since he tried to push me off the flush.
DUG: bets $32 I bet less then half the pot so it looks like a weak bet saying I have a flush.
AR_GTAm: raises $88 to $120 Perfect he is now committed, he has so much in the pot already any bet I make he has to call since he is getting great odds. He would win if a J or Q hits, that is 4 outs, 8% if he has a heart he has 7 outs or a total of 22%.

I hope you noticed that I changed the banner of my blog. The reason Margarite and I are official dating so I thought I should include her in the blog. Below is a poker hand that I thought I had to show. It is a great example of where I should have lost my shirt but instead my instincts paid off and I won $180.75 which is about 3.25 years of living in Botswana.
Oh, the picture is of a professional bike race Mobe organized that went through our village. The only issue, there are no paved roads in our village so the bikes did not fair so well.

DUG: calls $18 Why did I call? Sometime you have to go with your gut. The chance of an 8 hitting is slim, though I am confident if one hits I will win a nice pot.
*** FLOP *** [Js 2s Td]
akaginsf: bets $38 He has QQ or KK, if he had JJ he would not bet as much, though maybe to chase the flush away.
DUG: calls $38 Why did I call? If he has KK or QQ I will win if any Ace hits of Ten. So that is (3) Ace’s (2) Ten’s. If any Spade comes I will win. There are still 9 spades. So that is a total or 14 cards that will give me a win. Out of 40 cards still not seen that is better then 4 to 1 to win. Though I am not getting the right odds with the implied odds I feel good about the call.
*** TURN *** [Js 2s Td] [2d] Not good, now a Q or K depending on which he has will give him a full house that takes one of my outs away.

Poker Statistics last 2 weeks
Click to Subscribe to Life Of DUG
This has been a busy two weeks. First let me explain the picture. I was at a restaurant the other day and I gave the waitress a fairly nice tip or at least I thought I did. She walked away must have looked at the tip turned around, and the picture shows what she did to me. What happened is I read the bill wrong and only tipped 10% instead of 20%. Well I enjoyed the pinch more then the waitress expected me to, so I ended up tipping her 30%.
It looks like I will be staying in the US a little longer then I expected. It has now been two weeks. The plan was to head back to Botswana this weekend. As usual things have changed. The Philadelphia Marathon is in a week, as I had mentioned I was planning on running, but then it sold out. It ends up I was able to get a bib (entry) and so I am back to running in it. It does not make sense to fly all the way home and fly back a week later, so I am staying, then yesterday I got an email from Margarite inviting me to spend Thanksgiving in South Beach, Florida. How a women that lives in Botswana and is from Holland, knows about Thanksgiving or South Beach I will never know, but there was no way I was going to say no to that invite. So that keeps me in the US until December 1st.
I also got an invite from Larry to join him in Tucson, Arizona in January. Larry is one of the guys I went hiking with in the Grand Teton Mountains. His step mom lives at a spa, hiking, high end resort and he asked me to join him for some luxury hiking. I am sure the guides will be better then Brad Armstrong. So now I have to decide if I fly home in December or just stay in the US, or maybe just travel to somewhere else for the month of December.
Poker
Over the last two weeks with all my travel I did not play a lot of poker. If you remember prior to these two weeks I had had two very bad weeks, close to my worst weeks for the year. The good news is over the last two weeks I have recovered nicely.
My statistics for the last two weeks are as follows in weekly order:
Winnings $141.60 with an hourly win rate of $32.00 an hour, I only played 4.42. After the two bad weeks I was focused on quality play and only played 70 hands an hour, but won $.46 a hand.
This week I won $194.30 with an hourly win rate of $15.46 an hour. I played 12.57 hours, so you can see my quality went down some only winning $.19 per hand.
I thought I would start something new and post my biggest pot for the week on both the winning side and losing side.
The below hand is my biggest winning hand and I won $127.20, as you look at this hand you will think I am a nut, but read at the bottom why I won.

The secret, I had a note on this guy, that said, “He will chase hands, and go all in when he misses and bet half the pot when he hits” So I knew the all in bet meant he missed. The best part was this was my first hand so everybody at the table thought I was a nut and I got a lot of action going forward.

Puerto Rico in 36 hours

(Scroll Down for Pictures)
The Puerto Rico trip started out a little hectic. The plan "L" was flying up from Washington D.C., "Z", Popop (“Z’s” Grandfather), and Dad (“Z’s” father) were meeting me at the Philly airport. We had a late addition some guy reading my blog contacted me and asked to join in on the trip. I told him the more the merrier. His name is Dwayne, he is flying in from Madrid, Spain meeting us in Philly and then we are all fly together to Puerto Rico. I stayed with some friends north of Philly gave myself 2 hours to get to the airport had no idea traffic stops dead when it rains in Philly, sat on I95 for 1 hour 20 minutes. Sat in the security line for 20 minutes and got to the plane with 10 minutes to spare. Got a text from Dwayne to hold the plane his flight from Madrid was late but he beat all of us to the plane and got upgraded to first class. A 4 hour flight no food or drinks. Good old U.S. Airways.
We took a taxi to the hotel got a great rate on the hotel using priceline.com $132.00 a night on the beach at a resort hotel. Once we were settled in we went to a local dive for some lunch and to plot our 36 hours in Puerto Rico. We had three goals for the trip and they all revolved around "Z" and were all firsts. "Z" had just turned 18 so the goals in order of importance:
1) Have a legal drink. The legal drinking age in Puerto Rico is 18.
2) Play live poker. "Z" has been playing internet poker for 2 years but never live.
3) Loose his virginity. "Z" is a bit of a ladies man but we have some concerns with his experience level so we thought we would help him take it up a notch. (Popop’s idea)
Right away we accomplished goal number 1, at lunch "Z" had a beer. Our
Hotel was very close to several casinos. So we felt goal number 2 would be easy to take care of. Goal number 3 we felt would be the toughest. We had to find a woman willing to sleep with "Z". Fortunately for us there was a gentlemen’s club directly across from our hotel so that was plan B if we could not find a lady that had a liking for "Z".
Puerto Rico is one hour later then Eastern Standard Time. So by the time we got lunch it was almost 5 pm. We headed back to the hotel to get ready to go out and hit the casinos.
The first casino we went to was the Marriott. They had 2 poker tables but they did not open until 8pm so we put "Z’s" name on the poker list. We then played some table games. Dwayne was a maniac he was playing this game called 3 card poker he must have lost $14,500.00 in less then 30 min. Popop played the slots and won $4.93. Dad did not gamble so he was a winner. "L" was down a few hundred bucks playing black jack.
"Z" tried his skill at 3 card poker quickly lost $40.00 realized it was a game of chance and not skill and decided to save his money for real poker.
We left the Marriott and went to the Condado Plaza to check out that casino. Nicer then the Marriott but no poker. Dwayne dropped $18,371.00 this time playing black jack, "L" lost $45.00 playing black jack,
Popop won $.67 playing slots and Dad did not gamble. It was approaching 7:30pm so we headed back to the Marriott to achieve goal number 2. Once we got there Dwayne lost $7,952.00 playing let it ride. "Z" noticed the poker was limit and not no-limit so we were out of there as "Z" would say, “Limit poker is for wimps”. We had had heard the Ritz Carlton had no limit Texas Holden so we all hopped in a cab and went to the Ritz.
The Ritz indeed had no limit poker the buy in was $500.00 so we pooled our money so "Z" could achieve goal number 2. "Z" played 4.5 hours of poker and won $100.00 he played good poker but not great poker. I think "Z" did a nice job considering he was 20 years younger then the next oldest player, the only player that did not speak Spanish, and the only player that did not know all the other players. It was now 2:30am. Popop and Dad had gone back to our hotel around 12:00am. We had not had dinner yet so we went back to the dive we had lunch at and had a very late dinner or very early breakfast.
In the am Dad "L" and I went for a run to Old San Juan. After that we all headed to the beach for the day. The weather was just awesome 2 goals down and 24 hours left, the clock was ticking but we had time on our side.
While at the beach Dwayne was chewing my ear off about buying a software company. Dwayne is a top sales person for a large software company that keeps screwing with his compensation plan and territory.
The management sounds like a bunch of idiots. Since Dwayne reads my blog "LifeOfDUG" he knew I was in the software business. He has found this software company that is for sale that is in the same industry he currently sells into. I think it might be a great buy and I might partner with Dwayne.
At 5:00pm Dwayne "L" and I went to Old San Juan for dinner and plot our plan for goal number 3. What a great dinner, we then picked up "Z" and headed to the Ritz for some Poker and women for “Z”. It was 7:30pm and the poker table was just opening. Tonight "Z" was covering half his action and "L" and I had the other half. Dwayne won $26,852 at 3 card poker with a straight flush and we had only been there 15 minutes. I won $100 playing black jack. No poker for me since I am a professional poker player I would have to show my card and all my statistics would be tracked and reported to the poker commission which I rather not have happen plus I was content to watch "Z". "L" was making a killing at black jack up $1,500.00. At "L's" black jack table were 2 very loose looking, tattooed, ladies in there middle 20's. "L" thought good prospects for "Z". These ladies were from Texas not very smart and very, very, very drunk. We made up a story about "Z", how he is a professional poker player worth millions. They went over and introduced themselves. Next thing you know "Z" took a break from poker he was gone about 30 minutes (dam young kids) when he returned he had a smile ear to ear we asked were he had been and he just said, "I do not kiss and tell" a few hours later we saw the Texas ladies and the had smiles bigger then "Z's". We think we hit goal 3, but we do not know for sure. After "Z's" break he dominated the poker table and won $500.00 doubling his chip stack. Then he won another $100.00. He proceeded to lose a few hands and knew it was time to leave up $300.00 for the night.
Dwayne ended up well over $34,563 for the trip. It was 3:30am and we were calling it a night.
We had 6 hours left in Puerto Rico we hit all our goals as far as we could tell so we were all feeling good about the trip. We hung out at the pool then toured Fort San Felipe del Morro — which is a sixteenth-century citadel which lies on the northwestern-most point of the islet of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Named in honor of King Philip II of Spain, the fort, also referred to as "El Morro" or "promontory", was designed to guard the entrance to San Juan bay, and defend the city of San Juan from seaborne enemies.
In 1983, the fort was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations and is part of San Juan National Historic Site. Over two million visitors a year explore the windswept ramparts and passageways making the fort one of Puerto Rico's main visitor attractions.
Facing "El Morro", on the opposite side of the bay, a smaller fort known as "El Cañuelo" complemented the fort's defense of the entrance to the bay.
After the visit to El Morro we headed to the airport. Sometime while visiting the fort the skies opened up with a down pour. All the roads flooded very quickly which made for a fun taxi ride to the airport.

Week of October 27th, 2008 (Fruit Cake Week)

(Scroll down for Pictures)
What a great week. I flew in from Botswana on Tuesday. I just love an 18 hour flight. Flew from Botswana to Frankfort, and then connected into Newark, New Jersey. I came back to the U.S. for several events. The big event this week is making fruit cake, next week Puerto Rico for a family retreat.
After landing in Newark I headed to Richmond, Virginia, I lived in Richmond about 20 years ago, I have some friends that still live, that I like to visit and catch up with. I lucked out and was able to borrow a Porsche 911 for the week. I had meet this guy when I was traveling in Peru a few years ago, he lived in Manhattan and told me if I was every in the area and needed to borrow a car he had a collection of unique cars and I could use one of them. I had no idea his collection included a 911 and that he would actually let me take it for the week.
When I left Newark it was snowing, not what I was expecting for October, as I headed south the weather cleared and warmed. I was visiting and staying with two friends John and Cliff, they are a gay couple I am fairly close with. Cliff works in the arcade industry and John makes candles. They make such a great couple, recently they adopted two little boys, one is 11 and the other is 8. The boys were so cute and insisted I drive them to school in the morning. They really wanted to drive in the Porsche and they also insisted I put the convertible top down even thought it was 42 degrees.
John’s candles are unique he makes them with all organic products, the base wax is made from soy, this is very important most candles are made from petroleum products, which omit green house gasses when burned, soy does not. To learn more or to order candles from John visit his website http://www.purelightcandleco.com/info.html.
I also visited a good friend or mine Sandy. Sandy meets every morning at 9:00 am with a group of house wives for coffee. Sandy invited me to join, or should I say I invited myself. This was a very interesting event I learned what house wives do all day. I thought they cooked and cleaned, but what they really do is, complain about their husbands, maids, personal trainers, and masseuses. Did you know most women rather have a female masseuse then a male one? It was great to meet these women and see what tough lives they have, compared to the women in Botswana, whose days are made up of chores.
I found a cool DISC golf course just outside Richmond and saw a band making a music video about DISC golf. http://www.lifeofdug.com/2008/10/disc-golf-video.html
After my visit to Richmond I headed to Washington D.C. to have dinner with my brother “L” and his girl friend “JZ”. They have recently moved to the Capital Hill section of D.C. a very nice place that is very close to many of the Washington attractions.
From my brothers I headed to visit a long lost distant family relative. This was the main event for the week make 60 pounds of fruit cake. Yes you heard me correctly 60 pounds. When I got there a lot of the prep work had been done. All the fruit and nuts had been measured out into 6 different bowls. There was a bag of sugar and a bag of flour for each bowl, along with a pound of butter and a dozen eggs. As you can tell this is very healthy fruit cake, then the secret ingredient, high quality Bourbon, gallons of it. See pictures for complete recipe.
You take a cup of flour and add it to the fruit and nuts, mix with a spoon until lightly coated. At the same time in a mixer you mix the butter, remaining flour, a cup of bourbon, 12 egg yokes, until a smooth creamy texture. Then fold the batter into the fruit and nuts. Beat the egg whites and then fold into the batter. From here you fill your lightly greased pans and bake at 275 degrees about 1.5 hours until light brown, be sure to put a water bath in the bottom of the oven. After the cakes have cooled soak them in bourbon and wrap in plastic wrap. Let sit for 4 weeks in a cool dry place, basement, garage, in 4 weeks unwrap the cakes and soak in bourbon, refrigerate for 2 weeks. Your fruit cakes are now ready to eat.
After making the fruitcake, I head north to go play DISC golf with Larry, Larry is one of the guys I had gone hiking with in the Grand Teton Mountains. Larry happened to be in the U.S. we hooked up through my blog and decided to play some DISC golf. We played in Tyler State Park, which is in Newtown, PA. It is rated as one of the best DISC golf courses in the world.

I meet Larry in Delaware and he followed me up to Newtown. Larry was driving a Mercedes and had no ability what so ever to keep up with the Porsche I had borrowed. At one point we were going well over 140 MPH. (see picture)
As far as poker this week I only played 3 days for a total of 15.15 hours and continued my losing streak with a loss of $596.00 or $39.34 an hour. I continued to play poor poker. The travel these two weeks will do me some good as my poker play will be limited. Below are two hands one shows very good play the other shows very poor play. One thing you MUST remember when you play poker is that the average hand in poker when you play all the way to the river is 2 pair. So if you have a hand that is less then 2 pair and you go to the river, there is a good chance you have lost since you have a below average hand.
This first hand I played very well and my opponent play very bad. The second hand I can not say the same.

Belok: raises $4 to $6
micula213: folds
DUG: calls $6
SaVasH: folds
LankeyMankey: folds
allstars6: raises $16 to $22
He is the small blind so there is about a 50% chance he is stealing or he has AK, QQ, JJ. If he had KK or AA he would raise but not that much as he would want some action (caller)
pryssing: folds
Belok: folds
DUG: calls $16 The pot is now $48 so it is $16 more for me to call that is better then 2 to 1 odds and if he has AK I am ahead right now. Also I will have position after the flop (last to act)
*** FLOP *** [Ks 4s 7h] Very good flop for me. I hit a set and if he has AK he will play this hard.
allstars6: bets $33
DUG: raises $33 to $66 The Pot was $78 and he only bet $33 that is less then half the pot that tells me he wants a call. There is a Flush draw but if he has one of the hands I think he has, AK, QQ, JJ he can not have 2 spades. So I will make a little raise to help build the pot. He could have KK, but that just means the poker gods are after me today.
allstars6: raises $138.40 to $204.40 and is all-in Perfect, he has AK
DUG: calls $112.30 and is all-in Easy call.
Uncalled bet ($26.10) returned to allstars6
